Hello, I am Brenton. Some people call me Brent. Some people have been known to call me Ben – there’s a story behind that, but I’ll save it for another time.
The surname is a bit trickier: Prigge. It’s originally German, so the final ‘e’ is pronounced. I suppose if you imagined the final letter as an ‘a’ you would probably say it correctly – or pretty close. I’m quite used to it being said wrongly anway! Right, that’s the name out of the way.
A bit of background: I was born in South Africa, the eldest of four boys, and had a very happy early childhood growing up in a very small village in the hills of Kwazulu Natal. We then moved to Port Shepstone on the East coast of Kwazulu Natal for my high school years, and that too was a very happy time – and the beginning of my love for the sea.
Dear Friends
I greet you in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
I have some important news that I need to share with all of you that will have a significant impact on the churches of our hub. I shared this news in a video that was shown at each of the hub churches on Sunday morning 6 July.
I wanted to share this news in such a way that you the congregations all heard it at the same time so that nobody heard it via the grapevine or the rumour mill.

Brenton
The beginning of the Methodist Chapel in Compton.
I am indebted to Allan Young, in his history of Compton Methodist Church, written to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the current building and to John Shepherd who brought the information up to date for our 70th Anniversary Celebrations.
Towards the end of the 19th century, a group of Wesleyan Methodists broke away from Mutley Methodist, and created a place of worship in their own village, in rooms in a cottage in Carter’s Terrace, which is now 2 Chapel Way. But the rapid growth of the fellowship soon meant a move to a house in Florence Terrace, and then in 1899 the purchase of land between Revel Road and Chapel Way for their own Church.
In 30 years the new building, our current hall, was again outgrown, and the trustees with much prayer and discussion, and despite the threat of war put plans in place to build a new Church, which was opened on 23rd September 1939.
For more than 125 years the Methodist community of Compton has worshiped in the village just down the road, or on this site in Revel Road. Today as celebrate our Church Anniversary, we praise and thank God for the faith and vision of our forefathers.
